What does a painting mean?
What does an honest work of art mean?
I never considered myself a painter. A friend said I’ve never fallen in love with it. It’s hard to contemplate what happens between pencils to brushes. I know the feeling of being done is when you’re scared that you’ll ruin it if you touch it again.
For me, a painting was somewhere where you’ve been and you take the viewer there. They are seeing the same thing as you, but they feel different. A reflection of what it means to them and not your vision. This part of comprehension always seems like a gamble. When you find the true meaning, your feelings were gambled.
I’ve been to many shows and had a lot of wine, but the taste of real things mixing with color makes me alive. Clicking pictures has been my journal for many years. I’ve shared stories, moments with the people or things in it. Funny how I always used to see people as mere works of art by the creator, as objects of the universe, meant to be admired. Their journeys seemed like stories, far away from my reality. It’s scary when you can’t feel what they feel, it’s worse if you can.
My teacher always gave one solution/homework.
“Just draw everything, but live.”
We all used to smile at this like we understood the assignment. Four years later, I’m still floating in the layers of these four words. I envisaged it every day, consciously scrutinizing how to be creative in my observations. My present analysis is as follows:
You have to be present and be honest. Seeing the colors of what they are, but perspectives are a way of creating that color.
It’s the same with pictures. No painting/picture is ever the same. (I’m not talking about filters) No one will experience that place as you did. The weather won’t be the same, the light can’t be replicated. It’ll be very different.
I wonder, why people worry about their work being stolen. How can we let someone else’s dishonesty tame us? It’s dishonesty to their work, their mind. The worst kind there is.
This is a great time for artists, as people are isolated and only we can show them the real world. It’s not just creating a travel reel, but what makes one move.
This isn’t a guide. My apologies for whatever this never turned out to be.
After all, we’re all just contemplating art.
